The terrified friends quickly informed a teacher who rushed Wong Chong Ren, who was a hole-in-heart boy, to the Kulai Hospital about 5km away yesterday.
He was pronounced dead 90 minutes later after doctors failed to revive him.
Distraught father Wong Kok Wan, 37, said his son did not show any sign of being unwell before he got on the school bus at around 6.20am.
“He left us without warning. None of us had any clue this would be his last Chinese New Year with us,” he said in between sobs.
Mother Liong Kaw Lan, 35, said she had lost a son who was cheerful and hardworking.
Chong Ren was the youngest of three children and had been suffering from a heart condition since he was very young.
Johor education director Markom Giran said Chong Ren reached the hospital’s trauma and emergency unit at 7.22am and was given medical treatment.
“But doctors pronounced him dead at 8.50am,” said Markom.
He added that the elder brother, Keng Yew, 12, also suffered from the same heart condition.
Kulaijaya OCPD Supt Zulkefly Yahya said the case was classified as sudden death.
He said a post mortem result showed that Chong Ren died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
It is a condition where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick and make it difficult for the heart to pump blood.
