In a university setting, there is a great diversity in terms of socio-cultural, political, religious and racial backgrounds among students and lecturers. This diversity, with the presence of an appropriate lecturer-student relationship creates a campus environment lively. Usually, a healthy relationship between the lecturers and students does influence students’ academic, personal and social integration.
Lecturer-student relationship is viewed as a helping hand in which the student perceives that the lecturer has his or her best interest. A positive relationship between the student and the lecturer is difficult to establish, but can be found for both individuals at either end. How the relationship of lecturer-student should be? Which are with a quality of good communications, understanding each other, and demonstrate respect among both.
How to build an effective relationship between lecturers-student? The answer becomes clear when lecturers interact with, and learn more about their students. Improving students’ relationships with lecturers has important, positive and long-lasting implications for students’ academic and social development. However, those students who have close, positive and supportive relationships with their lecturers will attain higher levels of achievement than those students with more conflictual relationships.
Do keep positive lecturer-student relationship with:-
* Lecturers show pleasure and enjoyment of students.
* Interact in a respectful manner.
* Show irritability or aggravation toward students.
* Show loves in order to feel a connection and sense of relatedness (in a right perspective).
Hoffman and Leak said that “We can not teach students well if we do not know them well.” Understand the words and you’ll find the answer of lecturer-student relationship in a positive perception.
